The American Quakers
The American Quakers with headquarter in Philadelphia worked in Vienna under
the direction of George Matthews in coordination with "Swiss donation (Schweizer
Spende)" and with the UNRRA and other organizations. They supported the
Viennese Food cooking for scholars, hostiles of the Austrian federation of labor
unions, in which 600 youthful workers and apprentices were housed, old Viennese
over 70 years, which were taken care of by CARE, and 13.000 tuberculosis (TBC)
suffering Viennese. Foods organized by American Quakers, here quantations:
From Octobers 1946 8.600 monthly food-packets for the tuberculosis-department of
the Vienna health department, 2.400 gallons cod-liver oil for schoolchildren in
Vienna and Lower Austria (Niederösterreich). Worth mentioning is still the
social work of American Quakers with young Viennese.
