About an evening in spring
Fifty Shades of May
Afternoon and late, tired people drudged and slaved
Hasten home, overworked, meeting greeting well-behaved
A life of prisoners of circumstance
But dreaming of a whirlwind romance
With music, wine and dance
Streets in faded grey
This are the fifty shades of May
A white dove, looks like peace, on a philosopher's memorial
Tourists taking selfies, selfies at the city hall
Ignoring dunning magisterial words [majis'tireal]
A sign reads: Do not feed the birds
The gag in every pic
When sunshine made my day
This are the fifty shades of May
A store sign, wrought iron, iron rusty brown
A bovine tubby crashing pulls the scrollbar down
Has a steady job as alteration tailor
But wished he was a weather-beaten sailor
On a river cruise
When the evening fades away
This were the fifty shades of May

Lines that did not make it:
Never gambled with his life
Never cheated on his wife
